    Description

Town of Swartwout Stock Certificate. One partially-printed page, 6.75" x 4", circa 1838, number 69. Signed by James Morgan, an early Texas merchant and land speculator. This unused certificate certifies "the holder of One Share of Stock in the Town of Swartwout . . . which is situated on Trinity River, Texas." Sam Houston was an early holder of stock in Swartwout. Printed on onionskin paper in Houston, Texas, by Telegraph Press. Some light text on the verso and ghosting under the signature of Morgan. Heavily toned along the right edge which is also chipped and wrinkled.

Reference: Streeter 244: "That the town was promoted in the fall of 1838 is shown by an interesting and quite extensive advertisement for the sale of 'shares or lots' in the town published in the Telegraph and Texas Register."

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
