    Description

Tombstone, Arizona: Tombstone Banker Reports to His Mother on Recent Fire. ALS of Benjamin Titus, Tombstone, Arizona Territory, to Mrs. Eliza Titus, Cold Spring Harbor, New York, September 12, 1881. Written in ink on two sides of 8 3/8" x 11" Safford, Hudson & Company letterhead, Titus informs his mother of recent events in his life in Tombstone, including his failure to make money from mining investments. He expresses his wish to "retain the place I have at present as regards mining operations-and it is absolutely necessary for me to make my expenses at something else." Tutus also refers to the recent Tombstone fire and his worries that he might lose his position at the Safford, Hudson & Company Bank because of the damage it caused: "The place I have was occasioned by the fire and I have been expecting that they would feel that they could dispense with my services after they got settled in their new building. As it looks at present I am all right for a time at least." The letter is accompanied by a canceled postal cover, 6.25" x 3.5," postmarked Tombstone, September 12, 1881 with printed return address of Safford, Hudson & Company Bank. Titus worked as a teller in the Stafford, Hudson & Company Bank in Tombstone and also served as Grand Master of the local Masonic lodge, King Solomon Lodge #5, from 1885 to 1886. On June 22, 1881, four blocks of buildings were damaged by the first of Tombstone's devastating fires. The letter and postal cover are in good condition.
