Tombstone, Arizona: Business License for Undertakers Involved in the O.K. Corral Shootout. Tombstone city license, 7.75" x 4.5", "No. 456", issued on August 1, 1881 to Ritter and Ream, undertakers. The license cost $15.00 and was for a term of three months and signed by the city auditor and the mayor of Tombstone. The firm of Ritter and Ream was established by Andrew Jackson Ritter (circa 1849-1899) and his partner W. H. Ream. Ritter, a Pennsylvania native and veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War, moved to Tombstone, where he became active in town and county affairs. An architect and well as a mortician, Ritter oversaw the construction of the Cochise County Courthouse and served as Cochise County treasurer from 1888 to 1888. Ritter sold the undertaking business in 1889 and moved to Mammoth. Arizona, to pursue a mining career. Ritter and Ream prepared the bodies of the Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton after the shootout near of the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881. An interesting document associated with the most famous event in Tombstone's history. There is a horizontal fold on the bottom quarter of the license as well as a few minor chips along the side and top edges. Otherwise the document is in good condition.
