    Description

Thomas A. Edison: Keys to His Menlo Park Laboratory. Thomas A. Edison worked and lived in Menlo Park, New Jersey from 1876 to 1887. In 1887, he moved to Llewelyn Park in West Orange, New Jersey, a short walk to his factory and laboratories on Main Street. While at Menlo Park, he invented the phonograph and the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb. During his tenure there, he earned the nickname "The Wizard of Menlo Park". We are pleased to offer a framed display of original keys to the Edison Laboratory at Menlo Park. They are handsomely matted and framed. Each key, save one, is attached to a period paper tag identifying the corresponding location. A circular metal seal of the "Edison Machine Works Incorporated 1886" is also part of the display. The items were acquired by the consignor approximately 40 years ago from the estate of his great aunt, Anna Knudsen (married to Edison patent attorney John C. Rowe). They were found hidden away in her attic which no one had ventured into for a long time.

The tags are labeled: "[key] of Motor Shed [from] Menlo Park, N.J." (two keys), "...Shop. Menlo [Park]", "Laboratory. Menlo Park, N.J." and "for small building containing motor & car. Menlo Park, N.J." One key has no tag. Altogether, there are six keys. The paper labels show a good deal of wear with some loss. These keys not only "witnessed" history, but were handled on a daily basis by an American considered the greatest inventor of all time! It is hard to imagine a world devoid of his inventions.
