R.M.S. Carpathia: A Possibly Unique Menu from the Ship Which First Reached the Titanic Following the Sinking. The Carpathia was a Cunard luxury liner and enroute from New York to Fiume in Austria-Hungary when on the morning of April 15, 1912 their wireless operator received a distress signal from the Titanic. The ship immediately set course at full speed (and even three knots past her rating) for Titanic's last known location. However, it required four hours to cover the 58 nautical mile distance, and the Carpathia arrived some two hours after the sinking. Picking her way through the dangerous ice fields, the ship picked up 715 survivors. The Carpathia's captain, Arthur H. Rostron, was knighted by King George V and received a gold medal for the United States Congress in recognition of the heroic action.
The ship arrived in New York three days after the tragedy with her several hundred more passengers than when she had when she first embarked and this menu is from that afternoon. It measures 5" x 7" and is in excellent condition (for strictest accuracy we note one trivial light partial crease). Our research has failed to disclose a single example of a Carpathia menu from that voyage ever appearing at auction. A perfect companion piece to the Titanic menu also offered in this auction; a menu from each final day a Titanic survivor would have spent on both boats.
