    Description

    Rare Early Texas Public Education Document from Goliad. One page, folio, Goliad, March 13, 1835. Written on manuscript Coahuila y Tejas revenue-sealed paper. This handsome document bears a few small areas of paper loss at edges and fold, but is generally fine.

    In 1835, an effort was made by the city council to establish a public school in Goliad. Here, James Bray, who surveyed the lands in Refugio when they were distributed under grants to settlers in 1834, presents his proposal to the ayuntamiento. In part: "Classes will be divided into three sections. The first... for students who do not read and write. The second for those who read and write. The third... for those able to follow the general course of studies." Bray also describes alternative classes and related fees. Although Mirabeau B. Lamar is often called the Father of Education in Texas for his proposal in 1839 that receipts from public lands be used for education, the Congress of Coahuila and Texas had bestowed over 17,000 acres of land upon the town of Nacogdoches in 1833, the income derived from the lands to be used for education.
