    Description

Printed Circular Rejecting Gradual Emancipation of Slavery.
Two integral pages and address cover, 8" x 9.75"
    New Orleans; February 16, 1826

A printed circular addressed to the governor of Pennsylvania signed by Henry S. Johnson as governor of Louisiana giving notice that Louisiana was rejecting a resolution introduced by Ohio two years earlier that would emancipate slaves contingent on their removal to West Africa. The circular reads: "Resolved by the Senate and House Representatives of the State of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened, That this Legislature does not concur in certain resolutions adopted by the General Assembly of Ohio, at their session in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty-four, proposing a plan for the gradual emancipation of slaves; and that the Governor be requested to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Executive of each of the united States."

Ohio's controversial resolution proposed that all people of color born after the passage of the law be emancipated at age 21 and transported to colonies overseas. For Ohioans, the resolution was "predicated upon the principle that the evil of slavery is a national one, and that the people and the states of this union ought mutually to participate in the duties and burthens of removing it." Governor Johnson of Louisiana wholeheartedly disagreed, and sent out the circular offered here voicing his disagreement.

With address cover addressed by hand to the governor of Pennsylvania, and containing a lengthy docket on that same page. A scarce circular capturing the antebellum slavery debate.

Condition: Flattened folds, with a few minor separations thereat. Paper has been replaced at an earlier time where seal was removed affecting the holographic docket but not any of the printed text. Spots of soiling, with edgewear and some small tears.
