Nineteenth Century Engraver's Proof Book. Belonging to H. E. Holloway of New York, this proof book consists of 182 pages full of engraver's proofs spanning the years circa 1848 through 1864 from Holloway and fellow artists J. W. Orr, Richards & Cox, et al. The subjects of the engravings include coins (from all over the world), wildlife, architecture, business logos, portraits, anatomical engravings, coats of arms, etc. Most of the proofs are dated and contain information such as hours of labor taken to create the image. Some notable images include the Bastille, two engravings for author Charles Dickens (one of which is a stylized version of his signature), the image of a Chinese barber at work, a banner reading "As the Southern Plantation Negroes," a map showing the entire length of the Mississippi River, engravings of sketches by Raphael, etc. The spine of the book is broken and detached with the front board. Aside from a few scattered spots of foxing, the images are in excellent condition.
