Description
Major Marcus Reno Court of Inquiry: Record of the Testimony of Captain Thomas M. McDougall, Who was in Charge of Custer's Pack Train. It appears that McDougall was the first witness called in Reno's defense. He describes a delay because "the mules became stuck in the morass," and how in due cause the pack train "arrived on the hill when Reno was." McDougall "called Reno's attention to the dull sound of 'Firing Down the Line' and then went away to throw out a skirmish line." He provided the Court with various details regarding Reno's situation over the ensuing 24 hours, after which Lieutenant Lee pressed him for his impressions of Reno's personal conduct. McDougall replied that at first "he didn't appear to be particularly cool, of course. I didn't see him again until the next day and then he appeared to be perfectly cool. I think he was brave. 'Every man there was brave.'" Pressed to comment on whether Reno's conduct was "calculated to inspire his men with courage," McDougall seemed to equivocate. Asked "Did you see enough of his conduct to justify you to form an opinion as to whether he exhibited cowardice," he responded: "I did not see much of (his conduct) until the next afternoon when we were walking along the line. I got a better (i.e. clearer) opinion of him then. I thought he seemed to have 'a good deal of nerve' the bullets were flying pretty thick and he didn't seem to mind them."One of the allegations against Reno was that he was intoxicated at the time of the assault on the Indian Village. However, "On the indirect examination he testified that he saw no whiskey on the trip, and never heard of the intoxication of anybody." An interesting and enlightening two-page account, glued to scrapbook pages as shown. Also attached are four telegrams dated July 7 and 8, 1876, sent to his wife and others, to the effect that "Tom is safe he was not in the fight." Interestingly one is identified as originating at "Little Big Horn."
