Law Enforcement: Early Brooklyn Police Presentation Badge. 2.5" x 3.5" silver-plated copper shell badge. The front has two eagles, the Goddesses of Justice and Liberty and is inscribed "Brooklyn Police". The reverse is engraved: "Presented to/ Sergeant John Reardon/ for his services in aid of/ the sufferers by the fire/ at the/ Brooklyn Theatre. January 1877." Lacks hinged pin attachment. The fire took place on the evening of December 5, 1876, during a performance of "The Two Orphans". It raged for nearly four hours and many spectators, as well as actors, were consumed by the flames or trampled to death in trying to negotiate the stairway leading down from the upper levels. Officially, there were 278 casualties, although few of the remains could be positively identified. The First Police Precinct was just around the corner from the theatre. We can find few references to Sgt. Reardon, but his efforts were obviously noteworthy enough to merit this recognition.
