    Description

John Wilkes Booth: Rare Two-Sided 1862 Playbill. 4.75" x 17.5" playbill, printed by F. A. Searle, Boston, for a May 9, 1862 benefit performance for Kate Reignolds at the Boston Museum with Reignolds playing the lead roles in performances of "Peg Woffington or -Masks and Faces" and the "Invisible Prince or The Island of Tranquil Delights." At the bottom of the playbill is an announcement that Booth will "appear on MONDAY EVENING, MAY 12. The Management respectfully announce that his engagement is for POSITIVELY TWO WEEKS ONLY. RESERVED SEAT LIST FOR EITHER OF HIS NIGHTS NOW OPEN." The other side of the playbill, entitled "J. WILKES BOOTH. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS!" offers excerpts of reviews of Booth's performances, including those from the New York Tribune, New York Times, and the New York Herald. These reviews were undoubtedly used by the management of the Boston Museum to promote Booth's upcoming performances, which began on May 12, 1862 and ran through May 24. During this run in Boston, Booth performed in "Richard III," "Romeo and Juliet," "The Robbers," "Hamlet," "The Apostate," "The Stranger," "Too Much for Good Nature," and "The Lady of Lyons."

Catherine Mary Reignolds (1836-1911) was an English-born American actress, dramatic reader, and teacher. Better known as "Kate," Reignolds came to the United States when her mother took an acting job in Chicago in 1850. She performed a number of times with John Wilkes Booth and for a while as a member of the stock company at the Boston Museum during the Civil War.
The Boston Museum opened in 1841 and hosted a wax museum, a natural history museum, and an art museum in addition to theatrical performances. Numerous famous actors and actresses entertained audiences at the Boston Museum, including Edwin and John Wilkes Booth, William Warren, and Kate Reignolds.
