John Wilkes Booth: 1863 Boston Museum Playbill for Merchant of Venice and Katharine and Petruchio. 4 7/8" x 13.5" playbill for the February 13, 1863 appearance of Booth as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" and as Petruchio in "Katharine and Petruchio" at the Boston Museum. Booth's performances in these two Shakespeare plays were held on the day before the last appearance of his four-week engagement in Boston. The playbill announced that the next afternoon "Mr. J. WILKES BOOTH will close the most brilliant star engagement in the history of the Museum, by his excellent rendition of LOUIS and FABIAN, in the CORSICAN BROTHERS." The February 13 appearance was promoted as a "Farewell Benefit" for Booth, which meant that he collected all of the proceeds from ticket sales for that evening's performances. Benefits for actors were usually offered by theatre owners as a way of supplementing an actor's pay. The playbill was printed by F.A. Searle in Boston.
