Joaquín de Arredondo. 1816 Manuscript Document Concerning a Tax in Maintenance of the Military. One leaf, 12" x 17", Spanish text, Monterrey, March 13, 1816. Central vertical fold and slight toning, else a handsome document in fine condition.

Joaquín de Arredondo was made commandant of the eastern division of the Provincias Internas in 1813. Arredondo quickly cleared the province of insurgents and after completing his assignment in Texas, he returned to Monterrey where he remained commander until the end of his tenure in 1817. In this document a customs official has asked for clarification of exemptions to the 8% tax levied to maintain troops in the area: "In Nuevo Santander exemptions are Laredo, Revilla, Mier, Camargo, Reynosa and Congregacion de Refugio...Exempt is the Province of Texas, reduced in actuality to two military points...". From the Taking of Texas Collection.
