H.J. Budington Republic of Texas Consulate Certificate Signed. One partially-printed page, 7.5" x 9", New Orleans, July 17, 1843. Budington, vice consul for the Republic of Texas, here attests that the attached North Carolina gubernatorial document is genuine. The secondary document, a one partially-printed page signed by Governor John M. Morehead of North Carolina, measures 8" x 13", Raleigh [North Carolina], November 14, 1842, verifies that John D. Hawkins of Franklin County, North Carolina, is a lawful magistrate. It is likely that Hawkins intended on immigrating to Texas to practice law and the Morehead document supported his claim of being an attorney. The Texas imprint remains crisp with only a small smoothed fold and a few minor stains; the North Carolina document, however, has marginal chipping and splits along its folds.
