Graham County, Arizona: Coroner's Inquest Relating to Death of Prostitute. Three documents relating to the inquest of the coroner of Graham County, Arizona Territory, into the death of Alice Wood, a prostitute, from an overdose of morphine in 1885. 1) Handwritten summons of jurors, 8" x 12.5", dated June 22, 1885, and signed by E. J. Pring, M.D., the Graham County coroner. The summons reminds jurors that "all and regular excuses laid aside, you be and appear before the coroner of Graham County...at Clifton in said county of Graham on the twenty second day of June 1885...to serve as juror in a certain inquisition now holding before said coroner." On the reverse of the document is a list of names of the six jurors summoned. 2) Handwritten subpoena from the coroner Pring, 7.75" x 12", dated June 22, 1885, to James McCarty, Charles Linden, and Thomas Duval, to "appear before the undersigned Coroner...on the twenty second day of June AD 1885...to testify and give evidence in a certain inquisition now pending before said Coroner." 3) The sworn testimonies of Linden, McCarty, and Duval, 7.5" x 12.5", dated June 22, 1885. The statements are all handwritten, possibly by Pring, and signed by each witness. Linden's and McCarty's testimonies are three pages in length, and Duval's is five pages in length. These fascinating documents highlight the legal system at work in early Arizona. All the documents are held together by a brass attachment, and have horizontal folds. The first document, the coroner's summons of jurors, is wrinkled in places with a few small tears at the edges. Overall, the documents are in good condition.Auction Info

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
