    Description

Fort Bridger, Utah Territory: Judge Carter Archive. Binder containing an extensive archive of documents related to the Western territories, including the Dakotas, Wyoming and Utah. Many relate directly to Fort Bridger and Judge W. A. Carter. We count eight-four [84] individual pieces, dating from 1859 to 1889. but mostly the 1860s and 70s. They are addressed to Carter or family members. Many are from merchants and suppliers, written on company letterheads. The earliest piece, dated May 20, 1859, is a bill of sale for two slave girls to William A. Carter of Boone County, Missouri, in the amount of $1000. Carter would later gain fame as the post trader and Justice of the Peace of Fort Bridger, Utah. Carter also conducted business in St. Louis. A February 1863 letter written from Ruby Valley, Nevada Territory, asks Carter to provide information on the disposition of extended family members who were headed westward on the Oregon Trail and may have perished at the hands of hostile Indians. An 1868 letter from South Pass, Colorado announces the discovery of rich silver ore in the "Atlantic" region and advises Carter "don't part with yours for a trifle." A November 17, 1868 letter from New York gun merchants Merwin, Taylor & Simpkins talks about an order, mentioning that their factory is currently shut down. An April 5, 1868 letter from M. M. Hill of the Union Pacific Rail Road. "I am now on my way to the Promontory where we have three camps". A November 27, 1869 letter deals with the naming of counties in Wyoming Territory. "I think Augur's neglect of them & allowing the Indians to go in to kill those people was all right as from all I can learn they are the meanest kind of population & are more conceited than Bostonians or South Carolinians or Californians." An 1872 letter talks about plans to purchase some "American horned stock" cattle and conducting a cattle drive from Kansas to Fort Bridger. We have photographed some of the more interesting items which barely touch the surface. A choice collection which will not disappoint and which, ideally, should be seen. From the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, Ca.
