    Description

Elizabeth Custer: A Fabulous December 3, 1876 Letter to the General's Widow Detailing Efforts to Retrieve His Personal Effects Taken by the Enemy at Little Big Horn. This letter, written from Standing Rock by a career officer named W. P. Carlin who was quite active in the Indian Wars, really must be read in full to be appreciated. Carlin goes into detail in describing interaction with Indians as they try to recover items taken by them. He addresses Mrs. Custer's desire to reclaim the General's pistols and watch as well as a photograph of herself. "The Indians are greatly scattered, " he writes, "but they keep everything valuable to white people for the purpose of getting the reward that will be paid; and hence I believe you will yet get every one of the valuable articles carried by the General, except perhaps the pistols. You may even get them."

A truly remarkable letter in excellent condition, each page 4.375" x 6.625".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
