Edwin Booth: Three 1863 Boston Theatre Playbills for Shakespeare Roles. 1) 5 1/8" x 16" playbill for the October 26-27, 1863 appearances of the "Eminent Tragedian" Edwin Booth as "Hamlet" at the Boston Theatre. While Edwin was appearing at this time in Boston, John Wilkes, who had completed a two-week engagement in Boston on October 10, was performing in Brooklyn, New York, and New Haven, Connecticut. 2) 5.25" x 16" playbill for the October 5, 1863 [playbill misprinted the date as October 2] appearance of Booth as the Duke of Gloster in "Richard III" at the Boston Theatre. On October 2, his younger brother John Wilkes, appeared in "Richard III" in Boston's Howard Athenaeum. On the night Edwin performed in "Richard III" at the Boston Theatre, John Wilkes was appearing across town in "Othello." 3) 5 3/8" x 16" playbill for the October 24, 1863 appearance of Daniel E. Bandmann as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice" at the Boston Theatre. The playbill announces that "Popular Tragedian" Edwin Booth would "make his FIRST APPEARANCE in Boston this season, on MONDAY EVENING, OCT. 26, as HAMLET!" The playbills were printed in Boston by F.A. Searle.A successful American actor, Edwin Booth was the older brother of John Wilkes Booth and considered by many to be greatest American actor and, considering Shakespearian roles were his strong suit, the finest Hamlet of the 19th century.
The Boston Theatre opened in 1854 and became one of Boston's most successful venues for stage performances. It was in operation until the 1950s.
