Early San Francisco: Gold Rush Lettersheet Depicting the Hanging of James P. Casey and Charles Cora by the Vigilance Committee. In one of the most famous events in early S.F. history, the sensational murder of muck-raking publisher James King (of William) catalyzed the formation of a Vigilance Committee whose ranks quickly swelled to 6,000. On May 22, 1856, the Committee tried and quickly condemned Casey and Cora, who had committed a dramatic murder after a row over Cora's having taken a notorious prostitute as his companion to the theatre. A mob stormed the jail and spirited the two men away and hanged them from the J.P. Newton Building in downtown San Francisco.

Measuring 8.5" x 11", lettersheets like this one were perhaps the forerunners of modern postcards, presenting vivid images of the California Gold Rush on half of a roughly 11" x 17" sheet of paper. When folded in half, the scene served as a "cover," with a second blank page for writing.

Very minor aging, overall excellent condition, framed under glass.
