    Description

Contention City, Arizona: Rare Document from a Short-Lived Arizona Territory Mining Town. ALS by S. Marks, Contention City, to the Agency Pima County Bank, August 25, 1880, 4.75" x 7.5" lined paper, requesting a check for $153.00 "payable at San Francisco in favor of Moore Hunt & Co. and charge the same to my account." S. Marks was a merchant in Contention City, a Cochise County mining town founded in 1879 and located on the San Pedro River. The town's population never exceeded more than 200 residents, despite being the first town in the area to have a railroad depot. Contention lasted no more than a decade and was a ghost town by the 1890s. Documents from Contention, such as this one, are rare. The letter has two small holes at the top and one on the lower left corner, without affecting the text. Otherwise, the letter is in good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
