    Description

Confederate Sergeant Francis M. Eccles: Appomattox Parole and Oath of Allegiance. Eccles (1842-1872), a member of Co. "A," 21st North Carolina Infantry, was with Gen. Robert E. Lee when he surrendered to Gen. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The Army of Northern Virginia's defeated soldiers were allowed to return to their homes following Lee's surrender. With ongoing hostilities in many areas of the South, these men were issued paroles that amounted to safe travel passes. As only a few thousand of these paroles were originally issued, they are quite uncommon today. Eccles received this pass the following day [April 10, 1865], measuring 7.75" x 3.5" and partially-printed, reading in part: "The Bearer . . . a Paroled Prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go to his house, and there to remain undisturbed."

Five months later, Eccles signed this 6" x 4" partially-printed oath of allegiance, swearing that he will "henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will . . . abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of the slaves."

Also included, written in an unknown hand (possibly Eccles' own) from "Camp 21st N.C. Troops," is a note documenting the series of events leading up to the surrender placed on an 8" x 5" piece of ruled paper, dated the day after surrender: "The army of Northern Va. surrendered to Gen Grant about 10 Ock April the 10th . . . The Confederate forces numbering about 20000 and The Federals under Grant numbered about 60000. We evacuated Petersburg on the night of the 2nd of April marched about 6 miles till daylight marched all day on the third the distance of 6 miles."
