    Civil War Era Theater. Four Tremont Theatre (Boston) Playbills, 1863-1864. 1) 5" x 17.25" undated (circa 1863) playbill promoting events for the upcoming week, including a gymnastic performance by Young America, the "Celebrated Vocal Comedian" T.D. Corrie and a pantomime act by the Italian Brigands, in Jane English's New Tremont Theatre. The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F. F. Farwell. 2) 5" x 17.75" playbill for performances on March, 2, 3, and 4, 1863 at Jane English's New Tremont Theatre. Performances included a Spanish ballet entitled "La Maja de Sevilla," and the pantomime "Jocko the Brazilian Ape." The playbill was printed in Boston by J.H. & F. F. Farwell. 3) 4.5" x 16.25" playbill for the May 16, [1863] benefit for Paul Juignet, whose dramatic company would perform the comedy "Les Mémoires du Diable" at the New Tremont Theatre. 4) 5" x 18.5" playbill for the June 4, 1864 performances by the Tacon Pantomine & Ballet Troupe at the Tremont Theatre. The playbill was printed in Boston by F. A. Searle. Playbill #1 has a miniscule piece missing from the middle right edge. Playbill #2 has a tiny hole and slight tear on the middle right hand edge. Playbills #2 and #4 have what appears to be shadow of glue reside at their top and bottom corners.

    There were several Tremont Theaters in Boston. This one was opened in February 1863 by under the management of Mrs. Jane English. Within a year the name of the theater was changed to the New Tremont Theatre and later to the Tremont Theatre. This venue offered variety shows, operas, and stage plays. It was not very successful, however, and was out of business within a decade.
