    Description

Circa 1879-1882 Richard Gentry Colorado Smelting Ledger. Substantial 11" x 16" leather-bound ledger, 640 pages long and rather heavy. Leather-covered boards with gilt decoration, reinforced spine. The entries continue intermittently until page 271 ("Profit and Loss"), then discontinue. The enterprise started off with $30,000 in working capital and completed operations with $43,000. The ledger accounts for all expenses and income. We note two pages dealing with the "Columbia" and "Wide Awake" lodes. They serviced a "Phoenix" mine and kept accounts at the Banks of Rico and Dolores. Some loss and deterioration to leather, but generally sound.

This ledger is for the first smelter in the area, opened and operated by Richard Gentry, credited with setting the stage for the Cripple Creek Gold Rush. Before his appearance, the few gold mines had to ship raw ore hundreds of miles, eating into profits. The local smelter saved money and made mining profitable and much safer, minimizing the risks and costs associated with shipping. Gentry later served as President of the Colorado State Gold Commission.
