The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Charleston, Arizona: Three Rare Business Documents Relating to Trade with Mexico. Three documents relating to Springer & Hackes of Charleston, Arizona Territory. 1) A letter, 5 3/8" x 8 3/8", written in ink on Springer & Detoy letterhead, dated April 29, 1881, requesting the Agency Pima County Bank for "giving us the proper direction of Newton Lloyd formerly acting as Supt. for the Fort Wayne Mg. Co." The letter was signed "Springer & Hackes" and was stamped at the top of the letterhead "Springer & Hackes" in red, indicating that the firm had changed partners by this time. 2) A printed form letter, 5.5" x 8.5", dated December 9, 1881, from Springer & Hackes stating that all future bills "are payable at the office of Messrs. Feinberg & Winters, 205 Front street, San Francisco, on the 13th and 28th of each month." 3) Business card of Springer & Hackes, 4 5/8" x 2.75", circa 1881-1882, in Spanish promoting the firm's clothing and groceries, with special attention to sound trade. Albert Springer was a merchant in Charleston, first in the partnership of Springer & Detoy and later in partnership with Sidney Hackes, another businessman in the town. After Springer and Hackes went into bankruptcy, Springer moved to Tombstone, where he later worked as a cashier in the Cochise County Bank. These are three rare items relating to Charleston and the short-lived firm that conducted business there. The business card has a small amount of glue residue on the right-hand edge of the back, but otherwise in excellent condition. The two other documents are also in good condition, with the letterhead showing slight browning due to light exposure, but with no negative affect on the text.
