    Description

Battle of Chickamauga: Very Impressive Elaborately Carved Presentation Pipe. Carved brier wood, 2.5" tall x 3" deep (not counting silver fittings). This is a tour-de-force of the carver's art. The bowl is carved over nearly its entire surface. The front shows Lady Liberty astride an American eagle. She holds a Liberty Cap & pole in one hand and a outstretched laurel wreath in the other. The sides and bottom are intricately carved with oak leaves and acorns. The stem has a silver fitting and the bowl has a hinged cap which rests loosely in place. The lid is inscribed "Presented to/ Wm. C. Dressel/ by/ Lt. L. Mattern". The base of the cap is engraved: "Sep 18th & 20th 1863 In Memory of the Battle at Chicamauga [sic]". Complete with wooden stem and mouthpiece.

William C. Dressel served in the 51st Regiment Illinois Infantry from October 6, 1864 to September 25, 1865. Lorenz Mattern served in the 24th Regiment Illinois Infantry from July 8, 1861 to August 8, 1864 and fought at the Battle of Chickamauga. He later settled in Chicago. The quality of the carving on this outstanding pipe is typical, if that word can be used, with woodcarvers of German descent. Both Dressel and Mattern were German-Americans.
