    Description

Battle of Antietam War Claims: Group of Three Unique Documents. Margaret Shackelford was living a peaceful life in Sharpsburg, Maryland, when the armies of the North and South met at the Battle of Antietam. Her house was destroyed by Union artillery - one of two houses destroyed that day. Here, she files a claim against the United States for recompense for damages. One page, 7.5" x 6.5", [Sharpsburg], circa December 1862, titled "to Margaret Shackelford for damages done by the army of the Potomac on the 16th and 17th days of Sept. 1862." What follows is a list of fifteen items damaged during the battle, including a "House burnt by Shot and Shell" in the amount of $200, a rocking chair, four beds, carpeting, three tables, a barrel of flour, et al.

A second document, also one page, 7.5" x 6.75", Washington County [Maryland], December 11, 1862, certifies the appraisal of Ms. Shackelford's property by three men, Samuel Shaw, James Walker, and Rhinehart Line, who appeared before Jacob Good, a justice of the peace. The three men, he says, are "good and loyal men citizens of the United States and attached to the government of the same being duly sworn to value and appraise the damages sustained by Margaret Shackelford by the Army of the Potomac . . . have as certified said damages and do value and appraise the same according to the foregoing list of items and account as stated above."

The final document, on partially-printed page, 7.75" x 4.25", Washington County, December 2, 1862, certifies that Jacob Good is a justice of the peace. Each of the documents show separation of the folds which has been repaired with tape on the versos. Scattered foxing or staining can also be seen. To our knowledge, this is the only remaining claim made for damages suffered during the Battle of Antietam.
