Captured at the Fall of Richmond

Army Regulations Adopted for the Use of the Army of the Confederate States Captured at the Fall of Richmond. New-Orleans: Bloomfield & Steel, 1861. 8vo, 198 pages. Quarter bound with marbled boards. The Confederate printing originally belonged to Captain Thomas Kevill, whose ownership signature appears on the front endpaper. Kevill formed one of the earliest volunteer militias in Virginia; and immediately after the secession convention, Kevill and his militia captured Fort Norfolk on the Elizabeth River.

An inscription appears on a 4.5" x 3.5" piece of paper affixed beneath Kevill's signature on the inside front board reading: "This book was picked up inside the Rebel lines...on the morning of April 3rd 1865 by W. R. Whittman ensign U.S.N. M.S.J.C.B. Monadnock Stationed off 'Dutch Gap' James River Va." Heavily worn boards, front board is detached, but held on with tape. Additional ownership signatures appear on the title page, but they are not legible.

More Information: Though he served in the Confederate army, Kevill volunteered for duty onboard the new ironclad CSS Virginia where he commanded the number 9 broadside gun at the famous Battle of Hampton Roads.  Shortly after the battle, he returned to his original unit, Co. "C," 19th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery.
