    Appomattox Parole Document & More: Private John R. Harmer.
    Binder with research material and original documents related to Private John R. Harmer (1834-1908), member of Co. A 39th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry [Virginia Partisan Rangers]. Harmer served as a wagon master and forage master during the war and a fireman, farmer and merchant in the post-war period. 1) 7" x 7" manuscript on blue-lined writing paper, Headquarters 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, December 13, 1864. It assigns Harmer to assist Capt. John Glaize, by order of Capt. A. P. Pifer. Tape repairs on verso with some light stains and edge roughness. Good overall. 2) 4.5" x 7.25" manuscript written in pencil on one side of lined ledger paper, Appomattox Court House, April 10, 1865. Signed by S. B. Brown (also paroled at Appomattox), commander of the 39th Battalion. In full: "The Bearer Jno. R. Harmer of Co. A 39th Batt. of Va Cav, a paroled prisoner of the Army of Northern Virginia, has permission to go to his home and there remain undisturbed." Captioned "Paroled Prisoner Pass". A binder containing research material (mostly military records) and non-Civil War period documents (1849 and 1860 indentures, typescript of will, etc.) is included.
