An Important 1775 Broadside Offering Support to Refugees of Boston & Charleston "who are driven from their homes by the cruel hand of tyranny." Broadside, in the House of Representatives, November 2nd, 1775. Whereas by two Resolves passed the 1st of May and the 1st of July last, the Provision made for the Reception and Support of the Poor of the Towns of Boston and Charleston, who are driven from those Towns, by the cruel Hand of Tyranny and Oppression... ([Watertown: Benjamin Edes, 1775]). 9" x 14", signed in type by James Warren as Speaker and Perez Morton as Deputy Secretary. Margins rough with losses at upper left and lower right filled in, light soiling and creases, else very good.

The broadside issued by the Massachusetts Assembly in the 7th month of the siege of Boston, has been docketed on the verso "Resolve Relative to the Poor of Boston and Charleston." It concerns the difficulties inherent in absorbing a large population of refugees who had fled Boston and Charleston into the surrounding towns following the hostilities that commenced in April 1775 with the battles of Lexington and Concord. Specifically, the resolves sought to ease the burden incurred by the surrounding towns that had taken in these refugees, many of whom depended on local charity for their maintenance. The assembly, who had already assigned quotas of refugees they were obligated to take, offered some relief to these towns overburdened with strangers by re-assigning certain persons to different towns, and most importantly, offering financial relief to help with their support. Fortunately for the towns surrounding Boston and Charleston, the British evacuated their positions in March 1776, allowing those refugees to return to their homes.

Rare. Evans 14209; Ford 1873 (which notes two extant institutional copies: Massachusetts Historical Society and the Massachusetts Archives). Only two examples have appeared at auction in the past century.
