Albumen Photograph: President Lincoln on the Battle-Field of Antietam. Measuring 8.75" x 6.75", this spectacular image, taken by photographer Alexander Gardner on October 3, 1862, shows a meeting between President Abraham Lincoln and Army of the Potomac commander, Gen. George B. McClellan, two weeks after the horrific battle. Members of McClellan's staff surround the two men. Lincoln, wearing his ubiquitous top hat and frock coat, stands a head taller than those around him. Pictured from left to right are: Col. Delos B. Sackett, Capt. George Monteith, Lt. Col. Nelson B. Sweitzer, Gen. George W. Morell, Col. Alexander Webb, McClellan, Scout Adams, Dr. Jonathan Letterman, an unidentified officer often listed as Capt. George Armstrong Custer, Lincoln, Col. Henry J. Hunt, Gen. Fitz John Porter, an unidentified officer, Col. Frederick T. Locke, Gen. Andrew A. Humphreys, and another officer variously identified as either Custer or Col. George A. Batchelder. The location is often identified as Fitz John Porter's Fifth Army Corps headquarters. Affixed to a Gardner mount to an overall size of 14.5" x 12.5". A short description of the events surrounding Lincoln's visit (also by Gardner) accompanies the image.

Gardner published this image as plate 23 (attested to with a pencil notation on the verso) in his Photographic Sketchbook of the Civil War, 1865-66. The mount shows mat burning of different shades. Image is very clean with the exception of one spot of very light staining near the upper edge. Mounting remnants on the verso.
