African Americana: Post-Civil War Oath of Allegiance for Texas Freedman. Interesting lot concerning an African American gentleman who lived in Parker County, Texas in the Civil War period, but who was likely not a slave. As with Confederate soldiers and supporters of the Lost Cause, he was required to sign an Oath of Allegiance in the post-war period. He may have served in or with the Confederate Army. We offer a two-sided 8.25" x 11" document, Parker County, Texas, July 26, 1867, being an Oath of Allegiance signed by Henry Johnson with his "mark". An official at the time has written "Colored" in purple ink across the main body of text. The verso is certification by the Register's Office that Johnson is a duly-qualified elector, meaning he could vote. The right to vote was not granted to African Americans on a nationwide basis until the passage of the 15th amendment in 1870. Apparently, Johnson met the local requirements and was granted the elective franchise. Scattered ink stains with a few teensy holes. Sold together with a 2" x 3 1/4" tintype portrait of Johnson, found with the document.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
