30-Star U. S. Flag or Naval Ensign. 134" x 82" (approximately) wool & wool bunting 30-star flag. There are thirty [30] appliqued stars in a row pattern [6 x 5] on both sides of the canton. The bottom red stripe has been folded over and stitched down, so that the visible bottom stripe is white, rather than red (likely done to conceal fraying). The hoist has two brass grommets. It has several inscriptions, including: "J. E. Hoyt/ A.L./ Mr. H. O. Hall [?]" and "Ensign 8 12" (likely indicating original dimensions of 96" x 144" or 8' x 12'). The thirty stars indicate a time frame of May 29, 1848 to September 9, 1850. Brass grommets did not come into use until the Civil War; however, these could have been added later. From the Dr. Clarence R. Rungee Collection.

Condition: One vertical tear in the canton, one horizontal tear in the canton extending from the top edge to the second row of stars, Replacement patch top stripe left and top stripe right. A horizontal tear just below the patch in the upper right corner. Small patch along the 4th red stripe, at the right edge. Scattered small holes and stains. Good overall.
