    Description

1831 Mexican Document Regarding the Administration of Military Posts in Texas. 8pp., 6.5" x 7.75", from lieutenant colonel Vicente Arreola, Presidio at Monclova, dated August 3, 1831 at Bexar, addressed to the commander of the picket at Nacogdoches. Spanish text, in ink. With major water stains that have affected large areas of text; however with some patience the entire document is legible Otherwise, with the usual toning to the paper and in good condition.

This document, roughly translated, reads in part: "The paymaster of Monclova company at Bexar... has examined accounting submitted for the Nacogdoches post, the Alamo company & for Bejar in the amount of 1600 & will return 21 documents, some of which lack receipts to accompany them...all items must have signatures & some are interest-bearing notes which are not admissible. Neither Sgt. Marcos Sanchez nor Cpl. Ramon de la Zarda nor any other subject there is authorized to sign interest-bearing notes for the military. Therefore returning the 21 documents as the [illegible] is solely responsible in case of future doubt or error that may result...."

A routine document, but interesting in the context of the transitional stage between Mexican and Anglo Texas. Accompanied by two additional documents signed by the same Vicente Arreola. One, a one-page receipt, 8.5" x 6.25", dated 1838, bright and in fine condition; the other a one-page document, 6.5" x 7.75", dated 1831, with significant waterstaining, else good. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
