    Description

[Texas Republic]. Galen Hodges Port of Calhoun Vessel Registration Certificate Signed. One partially-printed page, 14.25 x 16", Calhoun, Texas, February 1, 1842. Registration for John M. Marden, owner of the "Vessel called the John Y. Sewell whereof Edward Ryan is at present Master . . . a Citizen of TEXAS . . . and that the said Vessel was built at Matagorda in the Republic of Texas in the year One thousand eight hundred & forty." Signed twice by Galen Hodges as collector. Light dampstaining at the left and right edges and at the vertical fold. Areas of ink smudging. Scattered spots of foxing.

Calhoun, on Matagorda Island, was planned by the Republic of Texas in January 1839 when Congress directed the secretary of the treasury to have 640 acres on the north end of the island surveyed as the site for a seaport. Lots in the town went on sale in June 1841. A customhouse was established, and Alexander Somervell was appointed collector of customs. The town failed to prosper, however, and the customhouse was moved to Port Caballo. Calhoun ceased to exist by 1845.

Galen Hodges (1813-84), community leader and Democratic Party official, was born in Rhode Island and moved to Texas before 1838, when he settled in Matagorda County. At various times he held the positions of postmaster, surveyor, inspector general, alderman, chairman of the county Democratic executive committee, and treasurer of the Southern Rights Association. He was on his way to a Confederate veterans' meeting when he died in Victoria on May 10, 1884.
