[Slavery]. Criminal Filing Against a Freedman and a Slave for Assaulting a Female Slave in the Pueblo of Los Angeles. 17 pages total (on ten sheets), 8" x 12.25", June through July 1673. Written entirely in Spanish, the manuscript consists of a criminal accusation brought forth by Juan del Castillo, a merchant, against Gaspar (a freedman) and Sebastian (a black slave). Castillo presents testimony that Gaspar and Sebastian have injured Maria, his black slave. He has valued Maria at 500 pesos, and is demanding that Gaspar and Sebastian's owner pay for a doctor and other expenses.

The manuscript contains various witness statements and affidavits, all signed by the proper officials. Castillo finally dismisses the case, because Maria's injuries heal; but Gaspar, the freedman, is ordered to pay 6 pesos.

The manuscript has uneven toning along the left margins, with a wormholes only slightly affecting the text. Each page has been sealed in mylar (and can be removed), and housed in a maroon binder.
