    Description

[Republic of Texas]. Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga. Patriotica iniciativa que la Ecsma Asamblea Departamental de Jalisco eleva a las Augustas Camaras, y otros Documentos de la misma importancia. Guadalajara: 1844. 8vo, 34 pages, in Spanish. Publisher's wraps with paper label affixed to the front. Toned with spots of foxing scattered throughout. Paredas talks about the recovery of Texas shortly before the beginning of the Mexican War.

Mariano Paredes y Arrillaga (1797-1849) was one of the great manipulators of Mexican politics during the early nineteenth century. He served as a Royalist officer during the War for Independence and sided with the Centralists after the foundation of the Mexican state. He was actively involved in politics holding the rank of brigadier general and briefly serving as secretary of war. Paredes assumed the Mexican presidency in 1845. He hoped to wage a limited war with the United States to increase Mexico's status and receive indemnification for the loss of Texas. His gamble failed, as United States forces defeated the Mexican army in 1846. By August of that year, Paredes was overthrown in a military coup led by his former ally Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.
