    Description

[Lexington Alarm]. Petition for Pay and Muster Roll. On the night of April 18, 1775, Gen. Thomas Gage, having recently received orders from Lord Dartmouth to enforce the Coercive Acts, marched some 700 British soldiers up the road out of Boston toward Lexington and Concord. The British advance was known, however, through information likely supplied by Gage's American-born wife. Paul Revere and William Dawes set off to warn the colonials of the British advance. The militia assembled from the surrounding areas to repel the invasion and numbered approximately 3,800 men by the time it was all over.

One of those men who answered the alarm was Capt. Moses Jewett (1722-1796), "Third Regiment of Militia in the County of Essex," who signed this one page petition, measuring 8" x 13", attesting that he "marched with his Troop of Horse on the Alarm of the 19th of April last through late in the day" so that he may receive "pay, for said Service & Charges as made up in a Muster Roll herewith Exhibited." The aforementioned muster roll, also included, is headed "A Roll of the Troop of Horse which Marched from Ipswich to Medford on the Alarm which was on the 19th Day of April 1775 Under the Command of Capt. Moses Jewitt," measures 13" x 16.25" and lists the names of thirty-three men with their ranks, the miles they marched from and back to their homes, the "Amount of Horse=Travel at 3 pence pr. mile," number of days in the service, various expenses including the upkeep on the horses, and the total amount of "Travel, Time, and Expences." Amounts for each category are listed at the lower edge with the total amount of money coming to £50.11.3 ½. The roll is dated April 15, 1776, on the docketing on the verso.

The petition has weakened folds that are separating at the edges, with repairs done on the verso with tape. Small areas of paper loss are also seen though they only slightly affect the text. Scattered foxing. The muster roll has similar condition issues (foxing, separation of weak folds) with paper loss along the main vertical fold affecting text, and ink burn.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
