[Leo X]. Papal Bull. One vellum page, docketed on the verso, 17.75" x 12.5", in Latin, Rome, September 4, 1514. Papal bulls were originally issued by the Pope for many kinds of communication of a public nature, but later only for the most formal or solemn of occasions. The lead bulla, or seal, from which the "bull" gets its name, is used to seal and to authenticate important documents of historic significance issued from Rome, but is absent here. Small holes exist near the bottom edge where the cords were formerly attached. The document has some text weakness and small holes at the folds with some chipping and toning along the edges.

Leo X (1475-1521), a member of the prestigious de'Medici family, was the last non-priest to be elected pope (he was a deacon at the time of his election). He reigned from 1513 until 1521 and is best known for his excommunication of Martin Luther after the publication of his 95 Theses.
