[John Hancock]. State of Massachusetts-Bay Resolve for March, 1777. Two pages, 8.75" x 14". Titled: "Resolves of the General Assembly of the State of Massachusetts-Bay." Document featuring eight resolves drafted by the General Assembly of Massachusetts-Bay, the most notable of which discusses the return of John Hancock to his home in Boston, due to illness. In part: "Resolved, that this Court do readily give their Consent, that the said John Hancock, Esq; may return from Congress to this State whenever he shall find it necessary for the Recovery of his Health." Other resolves address the suspension of sending supplies to the South, prevention of a ship leaving Salem from carrying more provisions than necessary, and concerning the last will & testament of James Gardner.

Seven months later, in October 29, 1777, Hancock resigned as President of the Continental Congress, a decision precipitated by his aforementioned illness. In 1780, John Hancock was elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a position he held for five years.

Condition: Chipped edges, scattered foxing, especially at the right margin, normal toning, pencil notations in the upper left and right corners.
