    Description

[James Monroe]. Message from the President of the United States, Communicating Information of the Proceeding of Certain Persons Who Took Possession of Amelia Island and of Galvezton, during the Summer of the Present Year, and Made Establishments There. Washington: E. De Krafft, 1817. 8vo, 46 pages. Sewn. Toned and foxed throughout.

According to Streeter, "This has interesting letters and testimony . . . relating to [Louis-Michel] Aury's establishment at Galveston, his removal to Matagorda . . . and the establishment of Galveston as a base for privateering by another group." Louis-Michel Aury (circa 1788-1821) was a French-born pirate and privateer who was made "resident commissioner" (the de facto ruler) of Galveston Island on September 3, 1816, during the Mexican War of Independence. Following his removal from Galveston, the surrounding area fell under the control of another French pirate, Jean Laffite.
