[Frederick Van Vliet]. Pawnee Vocabulary compiled by Frederick Van Vliet. Eight pages, 7.25" x 12.5", Wyoming, 1873. Frederick Van Vliet, the brother of Union General Stewart Van Vliet, served in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war, he accompanied his regiment to the New Mexico and Arizona Territories. He transferred north sometime with the U.S. 3rd Cavalry and participated in the Black Hills and Yellowstone Campaigns during the 1870s.

While on duty at Fort D. A. Russell in the Wyoming Territory in 1873, he compiled this "Vocabulary of 'Pawnee Indian' Language," a Caddoan language containing nine consonants and eight vowels, with the help of Frank North, "White Chief of the Pawnees." This short vocabulary contains over 200 words for animals, food, weapons, numbers, colors, etc. The words appear in two columns with English on the left and the Pawnee equivalent on the right, spelled out phonetically.

Text is very bold and bright. Folds are weakened and beginning to separate in places along the edges. Edges are chipping in places. The upper half of the first page is heavily toned, but not affecting the text, with toning of the edges evident on the other pages.
