Welsh to J. W. Denver, Commission of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. The letter has great content, talking about politics, the Mormon War and shenanigans of John C. Fremont vis-a-vis mining claims. Some excerpts: "... it was not until the large grant holders like Fremont undertook to throw the honest miners from their claims that the people, both in the mines & out of them, began to study their rights and no one thing gives them more pleasure than when they say Denver went to Congress to represent us & Herbert to make money... I see by the papers that the army is likely to be concentrated here if there is the serious Mormon War..." He goes on to relate some personal misfortunes, including losing vast sums of money in the Hide & Tallow business, the loss of a child and a sick wife. "...in course of time our Merced Mine will pay if ever we can get clean of the Fremont Palmer litigation but when that will be nobody knows." From the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, Ca.
