[Death of Colonel Jesse A. Gove]. Archive of Material Related to the Death of Union Colonel Jesse Augustus Gove, Killed in Action at Gaines Mill, Virginia. Jesse Augustus Gove enlisted on October 30, 1861 as a colonel, and in November of that year was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the Massachusetts 22nd Infantry. He was mortally wounded on June 27, 1862 at Gaines Mills, Virginia. Col. Gove was no doubt beloved by his fellow officer, men and his native city of Concord, New Hampshire as illustrated by the letters and newspaper accounts in the archive.

Included are two carte de visites of Colonel Gove, one a Brady photograph; the other with an R. W. Addis back mark and signed by Gove. Both examples are sharp and in fine condition.

Five extraordinary letters written to Gove's widow by men of the regiment shortly after the battle make poignant reading. In a letter dated July 5, 1862, a close friend and fellow officer writes that "Gen Martindale told me that the Capt fell towards the close of the action trying to rally the troops. He received two wounds. There may be a possibility of his being alive, a wounded prisoner in the hands of the enemy...Gen Porter sent a flag of truce that night for the purpose of recovering the body but the flag was not received by the enemy." Included are also letters of condolence from fellow officers and Amelia Alexander, and a deeply personal letter from Gove's brother.

Accompanying the archive are several clippings from contemporary newspapers including a death announcement, and a printed poem honoring the dead of the 9th Regiment.
