    Description

[Civil War]. Robert Burns Archive. Comprised of three family scrapbooks, H. L. Scott's Military Dictionary, and over twenty post-war documents. Robert Burns was 29 years old when, on August 13, 1862, he enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company "C," 4th Michigan Cavalry. Only four months later he was made adjutant on the staff of Col. R. Minty, 1st Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Cumberland and remained in that position throughout the war, attaining the rank of captain the following March and major on December 11, 1864. He participated in several battles including the Battles of Franklin and Shelbyville. Breveted a Lieutenant Colonel in April 1865, he mustered out of service three months later in July 1865.

After the war he compiled several scrapbooks, each of which contain page after page of newspaper clippings. In one book he has compiled the obituaries of famous individuals such as politician and abolitionist, Gerrit Smith; journalist and abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison; Vice President Henry Wilson; Greene Smith, son of Gerrit Smith; et al. Pages 20 through 100 are stuck together from the glue. A second book contains the story "War Reminiscences: Experience of an Officer in the Western Army" by Captain William S. Burns, spread out over twenty-nine installments, the first of which bears the date, written in pencil, July 31, 1885. The final book contains clippings on post-war brevet appointments, 1870s accounts by William S. Burns of the Battle of Tupelo, the Red River Expedition, and "Humorous Occurrences on the March," Robert Burns' account, 1889, of his trip to the South during a reunion of the Army of the Cumberland, etc.

Also included is Burns' copy of H. L. Scott's Military Dictionary containing terminology and military techniques used in combat during the Civil War. With several letters dating from November 1891 testifying to a claim made by Burns regarding some loss of hearing he suffered due to cannonading at the Battle of Noonday Creek, documents regarding the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, of which he was a member, and other ephemera.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
