    [Civil War]. Oath of Allegiance and Two Color Postcards. One partially-printed page, 7.75" x 4.75", Fort Delaware (a military prison used during the war), June 19, 1865. Here, Confederate soldier Joseph R. Kepler of Alleghany County, West Virginia, swears to "henceforth faithfully support, protect, and defend the Constitution . . . and the Union of the States thereunder" and "abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves." Kepler, who is described at the lower edge, signs in compliance. Mounted to a backing sheet to an overall size of 8" x 5.25". Large spot of staining at the upper left corner, slight ink smudging, and scattered spots of light staining.

    With two unused 3.5" x 5.5" color postcards bearing the portraits of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
