The burial of Santa Anna's foot

[Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna]. Printed Invitation to Attend the Burial of Santa Anna's Foot. One page, with integral blank, 8.25" x 10.5", Mexico, September 24, 1842. The invitation is issued by the Secretary of State and the Ministry of the Army & Navy, and the Vice President of the Civic Board to attend the procession from "the Alameda to the Cemetery of Saint Paula that will be conducted to lead the foot that his Excellency... Provisional President of the Republic, Division General D. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, lost in glorious action on December 5 of the year 1838, in defense of the rights of the Nation..." The invitation goes on to state that the foot will be laid to rest beneath a monument built by friendship and gratitude and that a tribute will be read.

Santa Anna was hit with cannon fire during the Pastry War against the French in 1838. The cannon ball shattered his ankle and resulted in the amputation of part of his leg. He ordered that the leg be buried with full military honors. Although Santa Anna's troops were unsuccessful against the French, Santa Anna used his military service to present himself as a hero to the Mexican people. The printed invitation we offer was printed during one of Santa Anna's subsequent terms as president, during which time he evidently had his foot disinterred and re-buried. Paper loss along left margin, the printed sheet is attached to the blank integral and presents well. Light soiling, and a paper clip stain at top.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
