    Description

[Alexander Graham Bell]. Archive of Service Reports and Installation of Bell's Personal Telephone Lines spanning the years 1880 through 1882. The bulk of material consists of sixteen service reports, dated January 10, 1881, to December 31, 1882, for work performed on telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell's personal line such as the installation of telephone wires, putting up telephones in his house, extending his line from his residence at 1302 Connecticut Ave. to 2023 Massachusetts Ave., connecting his home line to his laboratory, looping his private line to Bell Telephone Company President (also his father-in-law) Gardiner G. Hubbard's house, etc. Each report contains information on the work done and by whom, what materials were used in the process, and the condition of the work when the technician left. Each report bears the name of George G. Maynard, Washington agent for Bell Telephone, across the upper edge.

Also included is a Hand Drawn Diagram, in pen, showing the extension of Alexander Graham Bell's personal telephone line to Georgetown. Being one page, measuring 11" x 8.25", Washington, and dated May 19, 1881, the diagram shows the connection of a line, totaling 12,610 feet in length, at four points: corner of 22nd and P St., the house between P St. and Mass Ave. and 21st and 22nd street, 1524 21st St., and 2028 Mass Ave. The folds are weakened and separating in places with chipping along the edges, but not affecting the text or drawing. [and:] Report of Prof. Bells Line on one handwritten page, 8" x 9.5", Washington, April 25, 1882. W. H. Newhall, who has examined the personal line of Alexander Graham Bell at four points (his laboratory, Massachusetts Avenue, Georgetown, and Connecticut Avenue), reports that he has "...Examined line and found it in good order. Examined Bells & Tels. at all places, cleaned & renewed 3 Bat[teries]...brought in Bell from Labratory [sic]...and put up one from Conn Ave house. the bell at Mass Ave rings weak there when you call from there, but rings strong when called from other stations. Brought in Tels from Conn Ave house and closed line on roof."

In addition, the archive contains three handwritten reports detailing the route that the telephone line follows and each of the connection points and three invoices of materials and their cost used in the project.
