EARLY LEATHER HELMET. At the turn of the century, one of the principals in sporting equipment was the manufacturer, Stall & Dean (Brockton, Mass.). From that period - or possibly in the 20th Century's first decade - there has survived this exquisite leather helmet.  We could speculate that it was intended for the ring (sparring) or for hockey.  But the greatest likelihood is that it was designed for football.  From the laced crown, there extend six spokes of wide leather.  Then handsomely printed at the forehead (lightly impressed) is the maker's name and the model - "5573."  Firm extensions protrude above the ears, which we assume were meant to defray the pain of sudden stops on the turf.  To secure the helmet, leather straps extend from either side to a canvas chin strap.  The gratifying feature of this piece, however, is its condition.  Mildly evident is that it saw service on the field of sport, but every element of this helmet, including the terribly perishable chin strap with its original snaps, is unaltered and EX/MT-NM.  Additional shipping cost may apply.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
