    Description

Early Confederate Andrew Jackson Stamp. CSA, 2¢ green 1862 (Scott 3) single stamp with tight margins at the top and at the left, tied by a light strike of blue "COLUMBIA S.C. DEC 5" town marking on "Central Association for the Relief of Soldiers of South Carolina" patriotic pamphlet published October 20, 1862. A 2011 census of this stamp on cover by Daniel C. Warren, M.D. records only 77 examples of the 2¢ green properly paying the 2¢ circular rate that this pamphlet requires and only 266 covers in total for all uses. While the census does not segregate pamphlet uses from circular uses, a review of the census shows that five or less pamphlet uses were recorded by the author and therefore uses such as this are extremely scarce. The pamphlet with toning spots and was folded in half vertically for mailing purposes. This cover comes with some collateral material such as a previous monograph about the 2¢ green and a later addendum, a $5 Confederate Treasury bill, three Confederate covers (two with Scott 7 and one with Scott 11), and a number of envelopes mailed to the previous owner's ancestor from the post-Civil War era into the mid-20th Century. Condition of the collateral material is a little rough. Pamphlet and stamp are Fine. Scott US Specialized Catalogue price for a single on cover is $3,500, CSA Catalogue and Handbook (2012) places a catalogue value of $12,000 for a single used on a pamphlet.
