Dr. Samuel Mudd: Photographs and Eyewitness Letter. Small, but worthwhile group of Samuel Mudd ephemera. It includes a possibly unique and unpublished portrait of the Maryland doctor who treated the injured Booth and was sentenced to imprisonment in the Dry Tortugas (Leach & Edkins of Baltimore back mark), a 4" x 5 ΒΌ" mounted albumen identified on the front as "Residence Dr. Sam'l A. Mudd" plus a 4-page ALS written by Louise W. Hutton (wife of hospital steward W. H. H. Hutton), Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas, Florida, March 20, 1869. Written the month Mudd was pardoned for his assistance during a yellow fever epidemic, Mrs. Hutton writes, in part: "I send you some cards of pressed mosses. I think them quite pretty. Dr. Mudd pressed a great many while here." Contemporary references to Mudd are quite elusive. Mudd has become a figure in popular folklore. His case spawned the expression "His name is Mud[d]", indicating being in an unpleasant situation. It was also dramatized in the Hollywood film "The Prisoner of Shark Island". Recent efforts by family members to obtain a posthumous pardon were rejected by Pentagon officials. So, to quote a title of a recent biography, "His Name Is Still Mudd".
